Turn your EYES to GOD as He NEVER turns AWAY His EYES from us
June 11 Bible Reading: Psalms Chapters 32-37
"The Lord looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men. From the place of His dwelling He looks on all the inhabitants of the earth; He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works. Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine." (Psalms 33:13-15, 18-19)
Psalms 33 begins with a call to the righteous and upright people to praise God (vv. 1–3). The psalmist goes into extraordinary lengths to give the reasons why these people should praise God (vv. 4–19), and finally ends with an appropriate conclusion (vv. 20–22) in this beautiful hymn of praise. There are two significant reasons to praise God: (a) God is dependable in both His Word (vv. 4–9) and His work (vv. 10–12), and (b) God is just and loyal in dealing with His children (vv. 13–19). The psalmist concludes by expressing the joyful hope of the godly in God alone!
God is truly concerned for the righteous people on this earth (vv. 12–19). As God looks down from heaven, He has a perfect view of all humankind, and nothing escapes His attention. God not only sees all the activities done on the earth, but He also knows the thoughts and intents of every heart as well (1 Chron. 28:9). It should be of great comfort for all those who live righteously to know that all their actions and even all their thoughts are being scrutinized intently by God. God does not only view the thoughts and actions of humans from heaven; but He evaluates and judges them as well.
In fact, God looks on humankind with a sense of discriminating pleasure at His righteous children. God sees those who trust in Him for salvation and who depend on His mercy for provision with favor. These are the righteous people who truly live to please Him. Those who fear God do not need to fear anything else. Whatever God’s eye can observe, His sovereign hand can preserve as well. This is an accurate description of God’s care for His people. God watches all people, but He looks with delight on those who fear Him and hope in His mercy: "The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His mercy" (Psalms 147:11).
Why doesn’t God ever turn away His eyes from us? There are four possible reasons:
- God is considering all our works (see v. 15). God is checking to see if we are actually coming up to His expectations: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Eph. 2:10).
- God wants to guide us daily, and this is His promise: "I (God) will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I (God) will guide you with My eye" (Psalms 32:8).
- God wants to deliver us from death, and this is His promise: "Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him...to deliver their soul from death" (vv. 18-19).
- God wants to keep us alive from famine, and this is His promise: "Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him...to keep them alive in famine" (vv. 18-19).
