Be always AWARE of God’s BOUNDARIES upon our LIVES
June 7 Bible Reading: Psalms Chapters 1-9
"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night" (Psalms 1:1-2)
Psalm 1 is categorized as a wisdom psalm as it presents itself like a beacon of wisdom light piercing the darkness of a stormy night to help a traveler find his way. The journey of life offers two ways to travel: the way of the righteous and the way of the wicked, and this psalm presents a striking contrast between the way of the righteous (vv. 1–3) and the way of the wicked (vv. 4–6). This psalm differentiates on the character, ways and destinies of the righteous and wicked people, and serves as an introduction to the entire book of Psalms.
This psalm affirms to us that there is one way to true life, and to ignore this way is to foolishly accept death (see Prov. 1:20–33). This way is to intimately know and obey God’s Word, which is the secret to success in life (Josh. 1:8; Prov. 1:7; 9:10; 15:33; Ps. 111:10). The way to intimately know God’s Word is to saturate oneself in it (v. 2). The person who reads, meditates, delights and obeys God’s Word will avoid evil influences, deeds, and attitudes (v. 1). His conduct will not be shaped by worldly standards, he will not make his association with evil men, and he will not have any fellowship with those who scorn God. As a reward, his own life is enriched, he becomes a channel of blessing to others, and God will ultimately cause him to prosper in life!
This blessed person has such an insatiable hunger for God’s Word that he meditates on it day and night. God will eventually give this person discernment to avoid the steps that lead to sin: to consider engaging in sin (walking), to contemplate indulging in sin (standing), and to be comfortable immersing in sin (sitting). We too should have a clear view of the boundaries that God has placed in our lives through the discernment that God provides us through His Word. God’s boundaries will always keep us within the bounds of His blessings!
Let us understand that a blessed life comes from delighting in God’s Word, and not walking in step with the wicked people, or standing in the path of sinners. God’s boundaries are the divine fences that are constructed with wisdom obtained from God’s Word, and they will help us avoid the treachery and trouble of reckless living. Let our decisions and choices not be controlled by the ‘counsel of the ungodly’. Let us not put ourselves in a place where those who don’t know Jesus can unduly influence our thought process. Let us avoid getting comfortable with those who mock God, His Word, and His role in our lives so that their thinking seems right to us. God’s Word is thus our best teacher that reveals His boundaries in our lives. Instead, let God’s Word fill our memory, rule our hearts, and guide our lives so that we are always aware of God’s boundaries upon our lives!
