Experiencing God’s guidance every day
February 11 Bible Reading: Numbers Chapters 7-9
In Numbers 9:15-23, we read in great detail about how God guided the Israelites in the wilderness as a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. The cloud and the fire moved according to God’s will. When they moved, the people moved; where they stopped, the people stopped. “At the command of the LORD they remained encamped, and at the command of the LORD they journeyed; they kept the charge of the LORD, at the command of the LORD by the hand of Moses” (Num 9:23).
This cloud and fire was appointed to be the visible sign and symbol of God's presence with Israel. Thus we (the spiritual Israel) are taught to see God always near us, both night and day. As long as the cloud rested on the tabernacle, so long the Israelites continued in the same place. There is no time lost while we are waiting on God's time. When the cloud was taken up, the Israelites moved as well, however comfortably they were settled there. When we follow God’s guidance, we please Him. Although His plans may not always be clear to us, we must follow Him. In Psalm 73:24 we are assured that God will guide us with His counsel and afterward receive us to glory. In Psalms 48:14, this is what we learn: “For this is God, our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death”. We are kept at uncertainty even concerning the time of our putting off the earthly house of this tabernacle so that we may be always ready to move beyond the veil at the command of the Lord (2 Cor. 5:1-5).
