God promises to guide us all the way
January 25 Bible Reading: Exodus Chapters 22-24
After providing the Ten Commandments as the foundation of the rule of law, God gave various guidelines to the Israelites which would serve them in their relationships with one another. These guidelines set apart the Israelites from all the other surrounding nations. In the midst of the guidelines, God gives His people a wonderful promise that we read in Exodus 23:20: "Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared". If we examine the Old Testament, we can read about the Angel of God in many places: Exodus 3:2; 14:19; 32:34; 33:2; Numbers 20:16; Joshua 5:13-14; Isaiah 63:9. As we see the continuing verses (21-26) of Exodus 20, this Angel of God will go before them and protect them from their enemies (vv. 22-24) and lead them safely to the Promised Land. Further, if the Israelites would sincerely serve God, He will cater for their daily physical needs (v. 25a – food and water), take away sickness from their midst (v. 25b), give them children (v. 26a) and none will die a premature death (v. 26b).
As the ‘New Testament Israelites’, we too have precious God’s promises to guide us all the way. Let's rest on these promises and ask God to give us guidance (Psalm 25:4-5) for He will surely guide us (Psalm 32:8) in our daily life. At times God will guide us through His Word (Psalm 119:133), and He will direct ours path when we put our trust in Him alone (Proverbs 3:5-6). “For this is God, Our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to death” (Psalms 48:14).
