COUNTLESS REASONS to PRAISE GOD for His ROLE in our LIVES: "For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth." (Psalms 139:13-15)
Certain Bible scholars have categorized Psalms 139 as one of the grandest psalms, as it is theologically very rich for combining the greatness of God’s character with the reality of human experience. This psalm speaks of God’s intimate knowledge of each individual on this earth since He has created each and every person from the womb (v. 13). The writer of this psalm, King David, summarizes four key thoughts about God’s role in our lives: God knows us intimately (vv. 1–6), God is always with us (vv. 7–12), God has created us (vv. 13–18) and, God will take up our cause (vv. 19–24). God knows us intimately because He owns us. He is like the inventor who carefully designs and builds a device and then becomes the owner of its patent!
In this psalm, David affirms that the work of God in his life extended back to his development in his mother’s womb. In fact, God has intricately and masterfully molded and crocheted our body and soul together in our mother’s womb, which exhibits His creative skills and craftsmanship. Radmacher suggests that each individual person has “... 60 trillion cells, 100 thousand miles of nerve fiber, 60 thousand miles of vessels carrying blood around the body, 250 bones, to say nothing of joints, ligaments and muscles”. This is a reflection of the marvels of the human body, its orderliness, its complexity, and its beauty by God’s design. As we reflect on God’s role as our Creator/Designer (Rom 9:20, 21), we should always recognize His lordship over our lives (Eph. 2:10). This should help us to develop a very healthy self-image as we see our personal worth as God’s creation as well (see Gen. 1:26, 27; Matt. 19:19).
Each of us is unique since God has made us that way. God has fashioned our tiny bodies together in the darkness of our mother’s womb. We are beautiful masterpieces created by God for His glory alone. Whether we think we are beautiful or ugly, handsome or deformed, in-shape or out-of-shape, tall or short, dark or fair – we all need to be thankful to God for who we are. We have been made so wonderfully and we see God’s wisdom and handiwork in every part of our human frame. In fact, every human being is an image-bearing likeness of God (Gen. 1:27) and bears His autograph as He has certified us as His “very good” creation (Gen. 1:31). We are unique expressions of God’s loving design and we are His amazing creation!
Let us cherish God’s gift of life daily as we travel on this journey of life. From our first breath even to our last, we are in God’s care since God has fashioned our days even before we existed (v. 16). We exist now only because the breath of God gives us life (Job 33:4). Also, because of Christ’s death on the cross for us, we are wonderfully restored to a right relationship with God as well (2 Cor. 5:17-18). So, not only has God created us so wonderfully, He has sustained us until now from the day we were conceived in our mother’s womb, and He has restored our fellowship with Him through His ultimate sacrifice. Do we need any more reasons to praise God today?
