Experience God’s BLESSINGS through God’s FORGIVENESS: "If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land" (2 Chron. 7:14).
The above verse is a key statement that sets forth the stipulations for Israel to experience God’s blessing through forgiveness. For His own chosen people - those called by His name - God extends a three-fold condition with three-fold results. If they would humble themselves (turn from their sin) and seek God’s face through prayer, then God will hear, forgive, and heal them. God actualizes His sovereign purposes in tandem with the prayers of His children (Phil. 1:9; James 5:16).
J. Barton Payne comments on this verse as follows: “This great verse, the best known in all Chronicles, expresses as does no other in Scripture God’s requirement for national blessing, whether in Solomon’s land, in Ezra’s, or in our own. Those who believe must forsake their sins, turn from the life that is centered in self, and yield to God’s word and will. Then, and only then, will heaven send revival”.
As the children of Abraham, the people of Israel belonged to God and the only nation during the time of Solomon where God’s name was being called. God’s blessing would flow upon His children when they would seek His face in true repentance (turn from their wicked ways). Only then could He remove their guilt and restore them to usefulness.
God promised that the nation of Israel would receive relief from the hardships caused by their sin if His people would turn back to Him in humility and prayer. Though this verse was originally addressed to the chosen nation of Israel, it has rightly been applied to all those nations which have a biblical heritage. It is the sure road to restoration and revival for all times. If the conditions are met, the promises are sure of fulfillment!
While this promise was originally given to Solomon regarding the people of Israel, it is certainly applicable to all who will call on the Lord in repentance and faith. These verses stand as a high expression of God’s readiness to hear the prayers of a repentant people (6:37–39). When believers humble themselves by praying and confessing their individual and corporate sins, God hears them, forgives their sins, and brings a measure of healing. Let us experience God’s blessings through enjoying God’s forgiveness in our lives today!
"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up" (James 4:7-10).
