SEEKING ‘only’ THINGS that ‘REALLY MATTER’: "If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory." (Col 3:1-4)
In the above passage, Apostle Paul exhorts us to set our minds on heavenly things that ‘really matter’. When we have our minds fixed on heaven and our eyes fixed on Jesus, then naturally we will hold loosely the things that are on the earth. We will then be always reminded that “we have died to sin and to the world, and our lives are now hidden with Christ in God”. We will not be anxious when bad things happen in our lives. Just like an object lying at the bottom of the ocean is unruffled by the storms and the tumultuous waves on the surface, our frustrations will turn into songs of praise when we have put our confidence on the ‘Rock of Ages’!
What are the things we should seek that ‘really matter’? They include obtaining a deeper knowledge of Christ, having a closer fellowship with Him, experiencing His resurrection power in our daily living, being victorious over sin (Col. 3:5–11), developing our godly virtues (vv. 12–17), fulfilling our domestic and social responsibilities (3:18–4:1), having an effective prayer life (4:2) and be fruitful in witnessing to others (4:3–6).
As a child of God, we have said goodbye to our former way of life, and have entered upon a completely new life of the risen Lord Jesus Christ. So, we should view things not as they appear to our natural eyes but only in reference to their importance to God and to eternity. A. T. Robertson writes:
“The baptized life means that the Christian is seeking heaven and is thinking heaven. His feet are upon the earth, but his head is with the stars. He is living like a citizen of heaven here on earth.”Let us continually discipline ourselves to focus on eternal realities, instead of the temporal realities of this earth since our lives are no longer dictated by this world but are hidden with Christ. Let us set your mind on things that ‘really matter’, and seek to experience all that we have in Christ!
